Winter has arrived in Chicago with cold weather and chilling winds.  Yes, this does not sound like a pleasant description but there are many ways to enjoy long Chicago winters! In addition to the vast number of indoor fun in the Chicago area, the whole family has access to many of Chicago area’s ice skating rinks. So, grab the kiddos, your skates, and head out for a day of winter fun! This list provides a curated list of places to ice skate in both the city and suburbs.  Please note, ice skating hours may vary based on weather conditions so always call ahead before heading out.


Maggie Daley Ice Skating Ribbon

What: The super slinky and curvy Maggie Daley Ice Skating Ribbon is scheduled to open on Friday, November 25, weather permitting through first week of March. This has to be the coolest ice skating rink in town with the city skyline serving as the backdrop. Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, the sloped quarter mile loop can hold up to 700 skaters at any given time and skating is free if you bring your own skates.  Otherwise, you can rent skates for $12, which is the same price as Millennium Park's rink. If you want to beat the crowds, then consider bringing your own skates or buying a used pair as they will come in handy each winter.  Bring the kiddos for some winter fun at Maggie Daley Ice Skating Ribbon, experiencing alpine in the city!

Wicker Park Ice Rink

What: In 2016, the Wicker Park Advisory Council Wicker Ice Committee worked in partnership with the Chicago Park District, 1st Ward Alderman Joe Moreno, WPB Chamber and WPB SSA#33 to open a new ice rink in historic Wicker Park at 1425 N Damen Ave in Chicago. The community funded and maintained non-refrigerated 60ft X 120ft rink was installed adjacent to the park’s fountain. The rink has four 4ft walls with two gates located near the sidewalk, directly east of the park’s historic fountain. The rink was installed and filled on Saturday, December 5, 2015.

Date/Hours: The rink will be installed on Saturday, December 3, 2016 and be open as soon as the ice freezes. Please check website for hours.

Lincoln Park Zoo

What: Get ready to glide this winter at Lincoln Park Zoo! Skate past ponies and glide next to goats at our rink at the Farm-in-the-Zoo. Bring your own skates or rent a pair at the Farmhouse. Warm up in the Main Barn with winter drinks and snacks available for purchase.

Date: November 25, 2016 to February 26, 2017

$5 admission; $5 skate rental

McCormick Tribune Ice Rink

What: The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium park will kick off the winter season on Friday, November 18 (weather permitting), on the same day as the 103rd Annual Chicago Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. The rink will open to the public at noon and remain open through Sunday, March 5, 2017. Now in its 16th season, the ice rink has become a Chicago winter tradition drawing over 100,000 skaters annually. Once again this year, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events will present Winter Workouts with free skating lessons on Fridays – Sundays, on hour before the rink opens.

Date: November 18, 2016 - March 5, 2017 (weather permitting)

Cost: Skating is FREE and open to the public, with skate rentals available for $12.

10 Chicago Park District Ice Rinks

Skate away at eight outdoor and two indoor rinks throughout the city. Open skates are available at all rinks and exciting events are available at most.  Many rinks will also provide Learn to Skate programming, as well as Pond Hockey and Rat Hockey. Sled assisted skating, which allows people of all abilities to skate together, is available.  Maggie Daley Park ice ribbon is open through the first week of March, while all other rinks will be open through February 20, weather permitting. Don't forget about year-round skating opportunities at the indoor rinks located at McFetridge Sports Center and the new Morgan Park Sports Center.

Peninsula Hotel Sky Rink

What: The Peninsula Sky Rink opens Saturday, November 19 for the 2016 to 2017 winter season! Surrounded by Chicago’s skyscrapers and twinkling lights, the rink is tucked into a pine tree winter wonderland and bathed in festive music and snowflake lighting. The skating rink's outdoor menu features a selection of hot beverages and snacks including hot chocolate, hot cider, hot dogs, and other treats to sip and snack amid the heated lounge area in between skates on the rink. 

Adjacent to the hotel’s Shanghai Terrace restaurant and four stories above Michigan Avenue, with views of Chicago’s iconic John Hancock building, the 2,100 sq ft outdoor skating rink is open daily.

Date/Hours: Opens November 19, 2016, daily. It is recommended guests visit the hotel website or call +1 (312) 337 2888 prior to arrival to confirm availability.

Cost: Suggested Donation: US$ 15 per adult | US$ 10 for children 12 years and under. All monies collected will be donated to two Chicago children’s charities: Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and Hephzibah Children’s Association.

Frozemont at Rosemont

What: Visit Frozemont at MB Financial Park to enjoy ice skating, hockey games & more at the Chicago Wolves Ice Rink at MB Financial Park. It’s winter fun for the whole family! 

Date/Hours: November 25, 2016 to January 5, 2017.  Additional special days on website.

Cost: Ice Skating is a FREE event. Skate rentals are available for $8. Tickets are sold on site at the box office.  Cash & credit cards accepted.

Old Orchard Ice Skating Rink

What: Let's skate! Westfield Old Orchard returns with a favorite holiday tradition in partnership with the Skokie Park District: a family-friendly Ice Rink. Located near Bloomingdale’s, the Ice Rink will provide cold-weather fun for all ages. Keep an eye out for special performances by IceSemble, a professional ice skating ensemble.

Hours: Monday to Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost: $3 for skate rental; $2 to skate; $5 total to rent and skate

The ice rink will close when temperatures are above 50 degrees or less than 17 degrees or if wind chill is below 5 degrees.

Watts Ice Center

What: Watts Center has two lighted outdoor ice rinks and is located on more than three acres of land at Watts Park, which includes three tennis courts, a disc golf course, and soccer fields. In the winter months, the sledding hill at Watts Park has also been a longtime favorite of Glencoe residents of all ages.

Date/Hours: Glencoe Park District’s outdoor refrigerated skating facility, operates (weather permitting) the day after Thanksgiving through the first Sunday in March.

Cost: The admission fee gives you access to the rink during Open Skate times. Proof of age is required; children under 3 and adults over 65 skate for free.

Outdoor Ice Skating at Glen Ellyn Parks

What: Looking for a place to lace up your skates and enjoy nature in her winter beauty? The parks and outdoor spaces of Glen Ellyn are not just for the summer months! During the winter, we have three outdoor rinks: Lake Ellyn, Lake Foxcroft, and Newton Park. These are a great opportunity to get out and practice your skating skills or to show off on the ice! If sledding is more your speed, there is the ultimate sledding hill in Newton Park. We always get plenty of snow and have plenty of cold, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up inside all day! Get out and enjoy the brisk winter weather in one of our parks!
