Mother's Day weekend in Chicago is full of fun family events! There are so many options on this list to celebrate mom.  Start the weekend by dropping the kids off for playcare at popular kid’s play space SOD Room. The kiddos will love some play while you enjoy some me time.  Then, the weekend offers plenty of family events such as the annual Kids and Kites Festival, Mother’s Day Painting Workshop, Mother’s Day Salsa Dance party or a Cinco De Mayo enrichment workshop.  Lots to choose from!  For a comprehensive list, please check the events calendar page. Drop Off Playcare

What: Drop off PLAYcare will be available EVERY Friday in May. Babysitting provided by Urban Sitter. Your child will be free to spend the morning in our tree loft dressed as a mermaid or Earth Day Super Hero, building with magnetic wooden blocks, creating skyscrapers out of boxes or cooking in our imaginary kitchen all while in the hands of the trusted team from Urban Sitter.

FREE Juicebox Concert

What: With engaging music and dance in a kid-friendly setting, the FREE admission Juicebox programs are geared toward the stroller set and enjoyable for the whole family. Children will experience a diverse range of artistic and educational presentations, with hosts regularly inviting youngsters to move, dance and interact with performers. Presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the Juicebox series runs on alternating Fridays at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Sing Along with Electric Neil

What: Sing along with Electric Neil delights young audiences with silly songs and tall tales every Wednesday and Friday at 9:15 and 10 a.m. at the Main Barn in Lincoln Park Zoo’s Farm-in-the-Zoo. Join Electric Neil as he performs original songs while the wee ones dance and sing along. This joyful jamboree features animal songs and dances for children ages 6 and younger accompanied by a caregiver.

Meet a Scientist at the Field Museum

What: On Fridays from 10am to noon, scientists will be out in the Museum sharing the wonders of our collections and highlights of their research. Hear about their work, see real artifacts and specimens from the approximately 30 million objects in The Field Museum's collections, and experience the Museum like never before. Topics will range from birds to insects, from mammals to plants, from pottery to spear points, and more!

Kids and Kites Festival

What: The 18th annual Chicago Kids and Kites Festival is a favorite family event! Celebrate Spring in Lincoln Park (Montrose and Wilson) at this fun and FREE kite event! The City of Chicago will provide kite kits for children to build, decorate and fly, while supplies last. Other activities include face painting, balloon artists and crafts. The most popular highlight of the festival is the Big Kite Candy Drop, which is a piñata-like kite filled with candies that drop from the sky, taking place during the afternoon, weather permitting.

Cinco de Mayo Animal Enrichment Workshop

What: Join us to build creative items to enrich the lives of zoo animals! All ages are welcome to stop by and create edible piñatas, willow balls or other crafty items for animals across the zoo. Then head out to the zoo to see animals enjoy some enrichment. The program runs open house-style, so registered participants can drop by anytime between 1:30–3:30pm to make enrichment. 

Each Animal Enrichment Workshop is tied to a specific holiday theme, so you’ll also be providing the zoo’s animals with party favors for holiday celebrations of their own!

FREE Kids Workshop at Home Depot

What: Join our hands-on workshop with your child and build a special craft. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.

Green City Farmers Market

What: The mission of Green City Market is to provide a marketplace for purchasing sustainably grown food and to educate, promote and connect farmers and local producers directly to chefs, restaurateurs and the greater Chicago community. Come to the market to buy and taste fresh and delicious food. 

For your kiddos, they can join Club Sprouts, which encourages them to try new, locally grown foods. Free to join and your kiddos are given the opportunity to taste a different market item, some familiar and some unusual at each Green City Market. Tastings, crafts and projects are located at the Club Sprouts tent. Each day a child tastes a sample, they receive a stamp on their Club Sprouts membership card. Once the card is filled with 8 tastes, the child takes home a certificate of accomplishment and a special prize. How exciting is that! Start them early on eating healthy and learning about healthy foods!

Stand Up Paddle Family Lesson

What: We love introducing stand up paddle (sup) boarding to kids and turning them into proficient paddlers. Kids LOVE to SUP and are actually very good at it once they've mastered the skills and the equipment. Send your kids to our SUP Family group lesson or paddle together as a family.
