The holiday season is in full swing and Chicago does not disappoint with a full array of family friendly events to get you in the spirit.  There are lots of fun and free with things to do in the city with the family.  You can start the weekend with caroling at Cloud Gate, head over to Lincoln Park Zoo to see their spectacular Zoo Lights, get a free Nutcracker dance lesson and finally top it off with a kid friendly play: A Charlie Brown Christmas.  Wow, so much fun and festive happenings in the city!


Caroling at Cloud Gate

What: Holiday Music is in the Air with caroling at Cloud Gate! Bundle up and get ready to belt out some holiday classics at these festive events that are part concert, part sing-along. Local Chicago choral groups lead hundreds of celebrants in song. Following Caroling at Cloud Gate, head a few steps down to the McCormick Tribune Plaza for a spin on the McCormick Tribune ice rink in Millennium Park. Visitors will also be able to enjoy views of the official City of Chicago Christmas Tree and take a spin at the nearby McCormick Tribune Ice Rink.

Free Juicebox Concert: Bollywood Groove

What: With engaging music and dance in a kid-friendly setting, the FREE admission Juicebox programs are geared toward the stroller set and enjoyable for the whole family. Children will experience a diverse range of artistic and educational presentations, with hosts regularly inviting youngsters to move, dance and interact with performers. Schedules performance by Bollywood Groove - bG Kids Program. bG Kids Program will offer kids and parents lessons on Indian dance, culture, movement fundamentals and more. Children experience Indian culture in an interactive format and learn fun facts via stories, props, folktales, and upbeat music.

Zoo Lights

What: A Spectacular Celebration of the Season. Zoo Lights is an annual fun, free, family-oriented holiday celebration, featuring luminous displays and holiday-season activities throughout zoo grounds. Festive Activities include photos with Santa, free holiday crafts, animal encounters, 3-D displays, musical light shows, warm spiced wine and frosty lager, delicious dinner and snacks, holiday gift shopping, live ice carving every night, rides on the AT&T Endangered Species Carousel, rides on the Lionel Train Adventure and ice skating at Lincoln Park Zoo.

Funkadesi Family Concert

What: Celebrate 20 years of world music with Chicago's premier global groove group Funkadesi with an afternoon concert for the whole family, followed by a Transglobal Bazaar (included with your ticket!).

12 Days of Santa

What: Visit the 12 Days of Santa indoor holiday celebration at The Shops at Roosevelt Collection for free, fun, family-friendly events and activities! Joyous visits with old St. Nick will take place December 1st through December 18th on Thursdays and Fridays from 2 pm-7 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from Noon-7 pm. 12 Days of Santa will feature free photos with your favorite North Pole resident along with a magnificent interactive Santa’s Village display with twinkling lights and holiday scenes.
Families are welcome to engage in a variety of creative, holiday-themed arts and crafts projects including making Christmas tree ornaments, coloring, spin-art, and creating decorative picture frames

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Ice Skating at Millennium Park

What: The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium park will kick off the winter season on Friday, November 18 (weather permitting), on the same day as the 103rd Annual Chicago Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. The rink will open to the public at noon and remain open through Sunday, March 5, 2017.

Date/Time:  Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 10 AM to 9 PM

Cost: Skating is FREE and open to the public, with skate rentals available for $12.

Dance Along Nutcracker

What: Sugarplum fairies and mouse kings of all ages and abilities are invited to point their toes to the familiar music of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic with Ballet Chicago at this FREE event. Music for the Dance-Along Nutcracker® is provided by the Lakeside Pride Symphonic Band. The Lakeside Pride Music Ensemble is Chicago’s premier family of performance groups for members and friends of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community through its four major music groups – Freedom Marching Band, shh…OUT! Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra.

11am and 2pm: Members of Ballet Chicago will teach basic ballet positions and movements at an optional lesson.

Christmas Around the World

What: Explore rich holiday traditions from around the globe while creating your own traditions with loved ones in Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light. It began in 1942 with a single tree. Today, the Museum’s beloved annual celebration features a four-story, floor-to-dome Grand Tree, surrounded by a forest of more than 50 trees and displays decorated by volunteers to represent the holiday traditions from cultures around the globe. On the weekends, you can enjoy live holiday performances, take-home LEGO activities, and optional photos with Santa. It’s the one-of-a-kind experience that brings a whole world of holiday joy under one roof.
