Glencoe Beach in North Shore
Chicago's Lake Michigan offers miles of beaches for residents and visitors.  Not only is there swimming but lots of other activities as well such as sailing and biking with easy access to the parks that offer baseball, tennis, basketball and more! Chicago beaches are a great way to cool off and enjoy the sun. With so many beaches to choose from, one may wonder which ones are family friendly.  Some of the beaches are definitely geared towards young adults and partying, though fun and great people watching, it is not particularly the right setting for families.  This list provide our pick of 6 best Chicago area beaches for family.  All are kid friendly, not too crowded with great amenities.  Enjoy and happy summer! 

Foster Beach

What: Foster Beach located at Lakeshore Drive and Foster Ave. is a family friendly beach.  With plenty of parking, you can bring the whole family and even your pet for a day of water fun. The dog beach is located nearby for your 4 legged family member. You can rent bicycles, beach chairs or even a Segway. The beach house sells food, drinks, snacks and treats. 

Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, bike rentals including family bikes that seat up to 4, Segway rentals, beach house with concession, outdoor showers and restrooms.

12th Street Beach

What: This city beach is not as crowded as the other beaches making it an ideal spot for families. It is a secluded gem with a nice stretch of white sand that includes a beach house. It is in the heart of the city and nestled on the northern end of Northerly Island Park just south of Adler Planetarium on Chicago’s Museum Campus. A non-motorized boat launch is available at the beach along with a beach house.

Loyola Beach

What: The ultimate kid friendly beach, Loyola Beach is also the largest in the city stretching eight blocks long. Located in the East Rogers Park neighborhood, the location offers swimming, a jungle gym for kiddos, tennis court, baseball field, volleyball net and basketball court.  There is literally lots to do here. It also has a 2/3 mile walking trail along beautiful Lake Michigan.

The café serves plenty of kid friendly items such as grilled cheese and nuggets.

Glencoe Beach
Area: North Shore

What: A lovely drive from the city, Glencoe is a serene, beautiful and affluent North Shore community lined with stunning tree lined homes. The Glencoe Beach is just as fabulous as the community. It is super family friendly with playgrounds and water features planted right on the sand. Picnic tables line the beach making it an ideal place to lunch and swim. 

Amenities: Beach house has showers, restrooms and changing stalls. Sailboat rentals, paddle board rentals and kayak rentals. There are no lockers or parking lots, street parking only.

Gilson Beach
Area: North Shore

What: Located in beautiful Wilmette, just north of the city, Gilson Park is perfect for a family day of fun. In addition to sailing and swimming, Gilson is perfect for picnics, bike rides, volleyball, soccer, tennis and other fun outdoor activities. For your four legged family member, there is a doggy area on the sand for running and playing.

South Blvd. Beach in Evanston
Area: North Shore

What: Evanston's five public swimming beaches are open for the season on May 28. A daily pass or season token must be presented for beach admission. With a boat launch, kayak and sailboat rentals, kayak and sailboat lessons, kayak fishing trips and miles of sandy beaches, everyone can enjoy a day on the lakefront.
