Oktoberfest is a traditional annual folk festival in Munich, Germany. Each year, the festival draws millions from around the world to engage in Oktoberfest beer, German foods, music and family fun! You don’t need to head to Germany to enjoy as this German tradition is celebrated across the globe, which occurs in mid-Sept to early Oct.  We have rounded up some of the most family friendly Oktoberfest events in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. German American Fest – Chicago, IL

What: German Hospitality in two large tents. Good food, beer and wine served every day. Two bands playing for your entertainment. German Hospitality. Try authentic German food and traditional drinks. Dance to the music of German bands and spend the evening with friends and enjoy a fabulous festival. Talent on Stage. Traditional singing and dancing groups from Chicago will perform on Saturday after the parade and on Sunday at 2pm. 

Family Fun: Games for All. Amusement section of the fest will feature carnival games and family friendly activities.

Oktoberfest at St. Alphonsus – Chicago, IL

What: Located in the South Lakeview neighborhood, St. Alphonsus was founded by German immigrants in 1882, and continues to recognize its German roots by celebrating an authentic Oktoberfest every September. Keeping with tradition, festival-goers can expect to experience homemade bratwurst, the “oom-pah” of German bands, the music of top area headliner bands, activities for kids (“Kinderfest”), and of course lots of great beer! Our festival will be held outdoors in a beer garden fashion under a ‘big-top’ tent. Thousands from Chicago of all ages attend and raise their stein to toast this German event.

Family Fun:  Kinderfest is a great time for ‘Fest goers of all ages. Enjoy plenty of kid-centric activities, show the kids how to polka and treat the family to some authentic German food. It’s the perfect afternoon for everyone. Kinderfest is KINDERFEST is Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Craft Beer: The Craft Beer tasting sessions will be held in a spirited German beer hall within St. Alphonsus church. The event is limited to 650/night and attendees will choose from over 40 samples of craft beers! The selection of beers is intended to highlight both German-made beers as well as favorite fall seasonal selections. Each participant will receive a delicious pretzel necklace to accompany you on your journey of beer sampling!

Berghoff Oktoberfest – Chicago, IL

What: Celebrating Oktoberfest Inside The Berghoff Restaurant. Joins us for the annual Berghoff Oktoberfest. We will be celebrating indoors with decorations reminiscent of a Munich festzelt, a Märzen-style brew on tap from Metropolitan Brewing, and Polka-style bands W-F, 4:30pm to 7:30pm.

What: Please join us for the 10th annual Itasca Oktoberfest. All proceeds go to Itasca Walk In Ministry and the Itasca Food Pantry.

Berwyn Oktoberfest – Berwyn, IL

What: Berwyn’s Oktoberfest is the western suburbs’ biggest party of the year taking place on Friday, September 15 from 6:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. & Saturday, September 16 from Noon to 11:00 p.m. The event's mid-September kick-off coincides with the original Munich Oktoberfest, which starts on September 16 this year. The event boasts live music, an international food court, carnival and amusement rides, family entertainment pavilion, and crafters and vendors. And let’s not forget the Beer Garden, which will feature special Oktoberfest seasonal selections among others!

Glendale Heights Oktoberfest - Glendale Heights, IL 

What: Join us September 14 - 24, 2017 for the Sixth Annual Glendale Heights Oktoberfest which will be held at Camera Park in Glendale Heights, Illinois. The festival will feature authentic German food prepared by renowned Chef Wolfgang of the acclaimed Schnitzel Platz Restaurant. We will also offer authentic Oktoberfest Bier imported directly from the Hofbräu Brewery in Munich, as well as beer from the oldest Brewery in the world, Weihenstephan Hefe Weiss Bier. Our friendly Dirndl-dressed servers will be there to provide you service with a smile, just like in München. To finish off your meal there will be an assortment of wonderful Austrian and German pastries available.

Experience live entertainment daily including strolling German “Oompah” entertainers in one of the most authentic festival tents. What: Oktoberfest or OAKtoberfest as Oak Park likes to call it is a festive fall festival for the whole family to enjoy!  The event is located in downtown Oak Park and includes a premier music line up, delicious foods from local restaurants, specialty craft beers and a Kids Root Beer Garden!  Bring the whole family as there is something here for everyone! For city residents who want to make the trek, it is only 9 miles from the city!

Kid's Activities:  The Kids’ Root Beer Garden is open from 12-5PM Saturday on Marion Street. It offers kids the chance to participate in artistic, educational and hands-on activities. The Root Beer Garden features zucchini races, ninja obstacle course, root beer floats, games and activities sponsored by local organizations!

What: Oktoberfest at St. Joseph School is a family affair filled with shopping, foods, music and fun!  The Midwest’s best antique dealers and specialty item vendors display their wares for sale to the public.  In addition to shopping, this festival is filled with kid’s activities, German foods, beer and music.  Top it off with a dance party with music of popular cover bands!

Kid’s Activities:  A day of games, contests, entertainment and more! 

Admission:  Free to attend during the day. Evening dinner and outdoor party with music and dancing is for age 21 and over with an admission fee.

What: The 13th Annual Oktoberfest will be held on September 23, 2017 at the Vernon Hills Metra Station, located on U.S. Route 45. Free kids crafts, while supplies last. Free pumpkins to paint, while supplies last, The free hay ride is sponsored by the Vernon Hills Park District. Food will be prepared and sold by your local nonprofit organization. Beer (Blue Moon, Miller Lite and Miller MGD), coffee, pop, and water will also be served. Oktoberfest at Lynfred Winery – Roselle, IL 

What: This west suburban winery throws its annual Oktoberfest in celebration of the grape harvest.  Bring the kiddos for a weekend of fun, food, music and grape stomping and spitting!  Yes, grape stomping and spitting!  Both kiddos and adults can get in on that fun!  It is also a pig roast celebration with many contests and fun for the whole family!  Top it off with some wine from the winery and their delicious taffy apple, apple strudel or German Chocolate cake.

Kid’s Activities:  Kids are welcome and they'll be arts and crafts led by Gather from 2-4pm and big games like Scrabble, Jenga and more going on all day.
