With Memorial Day weekend around the corner, it is time to start planning for some fun family outings in Chicago! There is plenty to choose from to please both the parents and kiddos in tow. Mole de Mayo Festival in historic Pilsen neighborhood is a great way to spend the weekend outdoors eating delicious food, music and shopping local businesses.  Of course you don’t want to miss the Memorial Day Parade, which kicks off with a wreath laying ceremony at Daley Plaza.  For a more active experience, Bike the Drive is a gorgeous and active way to spend the weekend by biking Lake Shore Drive, cars are closed off for this spectacular event! Mole de Mayo Festival

What: Being held at Ashland and 18th Street in Chicago’s historic Pilsen neighborhood, the 9th annual Mole de Mayo festival will feature mole, pitting local chefs and restaurants against one another to find out whose version of the Mexican staple is best. In addition, the outdoor festival will also feature a number of the city’s finest food vendors, an open-air Mercado/Market that will be filled to the brim with local Pilsen businesses and crafters.

The event features 2 stages of great live entertainment, including music, dj, and dance. The lucha libre wrestling ring is also a huge attraction that is located in the heart of the festival. Don’t miss this ‘professional’ wresling exhibition with some high-flying antics from the wrestlers.

Chicago's Memorial Day Parade

What: Chicago's Memorial Day Parade honors all men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.
 
The Wreath Laying Ceremony will begin at 11am on Daley Plaza (Dearborn and Washington Streets). The parade will then step off at noon and proceed south on State Street from Lake Street to Van Buren Street.

During the Wreath Laying Ceremony and Parade, the City of Chicago honors fallen heroes and Gold Star family members who have lost a loved one in the United States Armed Forces to combat operations or while on active duty. Approved by Congress beginning in 1947, Gold Star Lapel Pins and the Next of Kin Lapel Pins are presented to families not as an award, but as symbols of honor worn by family members in remembrance of their fallen loved ones and their ultimate sacrifice.

Bike the Drive

What: With Chicago recently being named the #1 bicycling city in America by Bicycling magazine, what better way to celebrate than with a ride on the city’s crown jewel roadway — Lake Shore Drive. So grab your bike and enjoy almost 5 hours of car-free riding on Sunday, May 27th.  Proceeds benefit Active Transportation Alliance’s work to improve biking, walking, and transit throughout Chicagoland.

Date/Time: Sunday, May 27, 2018. Plan on arriving early! The event begins at 5:30 AM; the earlier you start, the longer your ride. We recommend starting at 7:00 a.m. at the latest.

Cost: Youth, $17.  Adults $50+

Green City Market (Farmers Market)

What: Green City Market Lincoln Park outdoor season operates May - October every Wednesday and Saturday from 7am to 1pm. Chicago’s largest and first year-round sustainable farmers market, Green City Market provides a marketplace for purchasing sustainably grown food and connecting farmers and local producers directly to chefs and the greater Chicago community. Great place to walk, buy produce, baked goods and delicious treats!

Chicago House Music Festival

What: The Randolph Street Market Festival is home to the world-renowned Chicago Antique Market, Indie Designer Market, Modern Vintage Chicago and the Holiday Market. Summer Fireworks at Navy Pier

What: Navy Pier is the destination for spectacular fireworks in Chicago, perfectly synchronized to music on Lake Michigan. Our biweekly Aon Summer Fireworks shows occur on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the summer, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  Be sure to check the schedule for additional shows added throughout the year.

Model Railroad Garden

What: The 7,500-square-foot Model Railroad Garden features trains running on 1,600 feet of track. The garden-scale trains are 1/29th the size of life-size trains. Train and garden enthusiasts, young and old, return year after year for the delightful sights and sounds of the miniature trains traversing high and low through tunnels, across bridges, and around buildings. All are intricately handcrafted with natural materials, including twigs, bark, leaves, acorns, and pebbles. More than 5,000 tiny trees, shrubs, ground covers, and flowering plants of close to 300 varieties re-create the topographical landscape of America. Vignettes of tiny people and animals give the exhibit a storybook feel, while sound effects and a working geyser capture visitors’ imaginations.

Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical

What: Join us on the hunt for your dearest stuffed animal, Knuffle Bunny, in this comedic musical adaptation of the Caldecott Honor Book by Mo Willems!
